Sand sculptures and fun at Bayshore beach

Chroma is making the most of the summer 2022! Last Sunday, Bayshore beach on the West Side of Saint John witnessed an exciting sand castle competition! Groups of families and friends, both 2SLGBTQIA+ folks and allies, showed off their talent in sand sculpting.

The day was organized by Sculpture Saint John during their 10th and final International Sculpture Symposium. Sculptures come in many forms, and instead of granite used by visiting artists, these were sand based with other natural beach elements.

With a focus on creativity and play, prizes were awarded in uniquely made categories for each sculpture, such as “best message”, “best architecture” and “best narrative.” A big thank you to our judges Alison Gayton and Maggie Smith.

The photos speak for themselves, but a wide variety of wonderful sculptures dotted the beach before the tide rolled back in. Among them, a mermaid, messages of positivity for 2SLGBTQIA+ folks, a frog, a giant snail hunting a sunbather, and a village inhabited by crabs, complete with a farmer’s field.

The Sand Sculpture Competition with Chroma & Sculpture Saint John is just one of the many activities Chroma has organized in August. Our first beach day of the month celebrated Disability Pride in partnership with L’Arche Saint John at Dominion Park Beach, and our August 2SLGBTQIA+ hiking activity took part in Heron Trail at Irving Nature Park. Check out our social media channels in this link to look forward to our September activities! Hint: there will be kayaking!
